Study Presented at ALA/ATS 1997 International Conference Shows the DOSER is Accurate Measure of MDI Use

Contributing Investigators: Michael S. Simmons, Mitchell A. Nides, Eric C. Kleerup, Donald P. Tashkin, Kenneth R. Chapman, Henry Milgrom, Cynthia S. Rand, Sheldon L. Spector

NEWTON, MA - May 22, 1997 - A three part study conducted at five research centers has concluded that NEWMED Corporation's new device, the DOSER, provides a reliable means for monitoring medication use from Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs), and can be useful to patients, clinicians and investigators. The Validation Study was presented Monday in San Francisco at the American Lung Association -American Thoracic Society 1997 International Conference, by Michael S. Simmons, Pulmonary and Critical Care, UCLA. The presentation was part of a symposium, "Monitoring MDI Use and Airflow Obstruction". An abstract of the study was published in the May issue of The American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

"This validation study shows that the DOSER is reliable and accurate for monitoring MDI usage. Since it is simple and easy to use, it is a useful tracking device for people with asthma and COPD. Additionally, the DOSER has the potential for improving patients' adherence to physician prescribed MDI therapy and can provide physicians with important, accurate and objective data on their patients' actual MDI usage." said, Donald P. Tashkin, M.D., Professor of Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Division UCLA, and Chair of NEWMED's Scientific Advisory Board.

The DOSER, which has already received FDA 510K clearance, was tested with a variety of MDIs by both technicians and respiratory patients. The data showed that accordance between the DOSER and tracking diaries ranged from 85%-98%. Simmons noted, "The DOSER performed very well during all three parts of the study, ranging from controlled laboratory situations to actual use by asthma patients." The study which lasted almost a year was conducted by NEWMED's Scientific Advisory Board, at: UCLA Medical Center; Johns Hopkins, Asthma & Allergy Center; National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Disease; The Toronto Hospital, Asthma Centre and the Allergy Medical Clinic.

NEWMED Corporation, headquartered in Newton, MA, is a medical device Company specializing in products that help people manage their own respiratory health. NEWMED's mission is to enable people with a respiratory condition, parents of asthmatic children, and healthcare professionals to better manage treatment. The company was founded in 1993.

The Company's first product, the DOSER, tracks the use of medication taken from a Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI) as the inhaler is used normally. It is the first and only product of its kind. With its self-contained microcomputer, the DOSER counts and displays the number of inhalations remaining in the MDI, and displays the number of inhalations taken in the current day. It also stores the number of inhalations taken in each of the last 30 days in its memory and alerts the user when the MDI is nearly empty. With its self-contained battery, the DOSER lasts a full year.
